Welcome to a world spawned by a working adventure which began in January 1986, when, as a 78 year old fresh faced youth in Asia, I was head hunted to take up a position as a bank clerk in the small Clackmannanshire town of Alva in Scotland.
My earliest recollection of Alva centres around a piece of graffiti which read "Alva Riffs Titch". I cannot remember where in the town it was located however one day I will attempt to trace the artist, as it is her or his words that inspired me to think about becoming a steeplejack. This, along with bus trips to Alloa where I would immerse myself in the thriving theme pub culture of the mid 1980s, meant there was always a dull moment in which to puntificate with others who sought solace in a world devoid of non conformity.
The Mar Cafe bolted on to Alloa Bus Station was, in it's day, nothing short of a culinary gem. I can still smell the fat from the square sausage frying on the big black hot plate. One day I will knock down the Alloa Leisure Bowl and recreate the Mar Cafe so that generations to come can be comforted as I was in those carefree days spent avoiding a right good kickin'.
Gregory's Girl and the other Bill Paterson films brought some light relief to the dampness on the edge of town.
